23 (Hamilton) Field Ambulance is a Canadian Forces Primary Reserve medical unit headquartered in Hamilton, Ontario with a detachment in London and Windsor. Our mission is to attract, train, force generate and retain high-quality health service personnel to provide health service support to 31 Canadian Brigade Group, to augment Canadian Armed Forces domestic and international operations while building and maintain links between the Forces and our community.
Our members are highly trained and skilled experts in their respective field providing service as medical assistants, medical technicians, supply technicians, vehicle technicians, human resource assistants, financial service assistants, physician assistants, nursing officers, medical officers and health service managers.
Recruiting
While we are actively hiring for all positions, 23 Fd Amb has particular need in the following areas:
Medical Assistant
All medical personnel are soldiers first. Medical Assistants are employed to assist and support Medical Officers and Nursing Officers to treat the sick and injured in Canadian Armed Forces units and on operations. Primary duties include providing initial care and basic trauma life support treatments, assisting with health assessments, maintaining medical records, providing medical support on weapons ranges and during training exercises.
Medical Technician
Similar in scope of practice to a paramedic, Medical Technicians work with a variety of health care professionals including Medical Officers and Nursing Officers to treat the sick and injured in various Canadian Armed Forces’ operations and units. Primary duties include providing basic to advanced life support care independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team, administering lifesaving interventions and treatments to trauma casualties, instructing soldiers on Combat First Aid and Tactical Combat Casualty Care, administering and dispensing medications, and managing soldier’s medical readiness supplies and equipment.
Financial Services Administrator
Financial Services Administrators provide financial assistance and budget resources support to all military activities. Primary duties include general office bookkeeping, accounts payable and accounts receivable support, payroll support and budget management services.

Our unit has a long history of service dating back to 1900 with members serving in WWI including The Battle of the Somme, The Battle of Vimy Ridge,The Battle of Passchendale and The Battle of Amiens to name but a few. On 1 September 1939, Commanding Officer Colonel Richard Farmer received a telegram that simply read “Mobilize Stop Ack”. Thus began the units WWII service in France , Italy and Germany. Members of 23 Fd Ambulance continue their traditions of service with deployments more recently in Iraq, Afghanistan and in support of other Canadian Armed Forces domestic and international operations.
